Quick question though: If all this advice is free, how in the world are YOU making money?
Learn so much from the Interview, thanks.
Hi Derek,
Today, I read your free ebook “How To Get Your First 5,000 Subscribers” about “conversion site review video”. Than,.. here I am.
I believe, video marketing is one of the best “conversion rates maker” in this new web3.0 age…
That’s why we just finished our new project to convert one of our squeeze page site with video background style…
Overall, we’re enjoyed your free ebook and this post, of course.
Thanking you,
Richard & Kristina Sue
Hey Derek,
I’d be really interested in seeing a review of a personal service based business, that has a blog as a way to get traffic to the site and maybe a static home page. Or do you think most sites would benefit from being blogs and not have static home pages?
I recall I only watched Lewis Howes and Laura Roeder’s review blog way back 2011.
But this time I should have bookmark this page so I can go back and watch them again whenever I wanted to.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information Derek.
Why are you giving this away for Free?
Very informative. Thanks Derek for making it simple and to the point.
A lot of valuable nuggets. Will go through all your points again and absorb as much as possible and implement your tactics.
Thanks and Regards,
Marik
Excellent blog post.
Focusing on conversion is the way to go if you want to grow a business.
Btw I just signed up to your Blog converts course π
Very exciting. I love your blog.
There are soooo many small things that one can do to a website to improve its performance and conversion that most small businesses are just not doing.
I look forward to start receiving your course.
All the best π
Hi Derek,
Thanks for sharing the relevant videos. It is really effective for enhancing blog conversion rate.
These videos are fantastic! Thanks to you for posting these!
Looks like this guy really has it figured out… Check out what I found today, it seems interesting. christopherstoddart.wordpress.com
Hopefully this will help me go from 0 percent conversion to at least 1 percent, sheesh. I feel like I’m getting my ass whooped on this “gaining subscribers” business.

Funny, I just spend 3 minutes searching a search box on social triggers, gave up and used Google. Not convinced about that detail but everything else is gold, thanks a lot!

Do you know how Laura Roeder is getting the clickable slider effect on her site. I’m using the feature box and would love to turn it into a slider explaining an application we’ve developed.
Great stuff. Learning a lot.

Thanks Derek, after watching your videos we have applied some of the above best practices and have improved the conversion rate on our blog my 0.5% already. Seems a small amount however on our visitor volumes that’s a huge improvement. Thanks again Mark
Thank you for this post. I haven’t watched all the videos yet but I’ve gone through the first few videos and paused along the way to implement ideas on my own site. It’s been a few hours worth of modifications to my current theme and headlines but I’m feeling good about the changes I’ve made.
Thank you again. π
Unbelievable content/videos. You could charge a fortune for this advice! Thanks. Great tips. I’ve got a big to-do list to get through. I also loved your post on the perfect font size. I’ve been pushing to get our font beefed up at my day job. They’ve resisted…until now!
Wow, you’re the real deal Derek. I love the advice you gave Pat on the About page, that really makes sense.

Good Stufff, really very useful videos. Thanks for sharing this article.
I’m so overwhelmed by the amount of information on this site. π I’d honestly never heard of Social Triggers before – earlier today a comment was left on a guest post of mine that referred to you, and here I am.
I was pretty heavy into psychology for a couple years after I left the Army in ’04, before I really started getting into marketing…and now I’m making an effort to put together an online program for veterans who want to legitimately work from home. So your site is an invaluable resource, and with the psychology aspect, something I can personally relate to and have an even deeper interest in.
Already subscribed here – look forward to being a long-time reader.
Take care!

Derek-first of all, you don’t have an accent, you sound pretty normal to me π
Is this something you offer as a service? I’d love to have you tear my site apart.
Thanks!
Hey Derek,
I love these videos. One thought about improving your use of YouTube embeds:
If you add ?rel=0 to the end of the embed url then Youtube won’t show the related from other sites. It should keep viewers more focused on your content.
Thanks for posting!
Justin
I found this post from a SEO forum…
Glad I clicked on it… Nice jobs on the videos
First saw your feature on SPI, didn’t know there were quite a few more.
Nice job on all of these.
I watched your session with Denise Wakeman and it was truly eye-opening. I’ve made maybe about 10 subtle changes to my blog. Starting to see some early results. Thanks for all you do, Derek!
P.S. Looking forward to receiving James’ video materials. Some great ideas there, too, that I’ve already started working on.
Great to hear that Heidi. Glad the videos have been a help too. Was the Denise Wakeman video your favorite?
Yes, the video session with Denise was my favorite! Thanks for sharing your insights with us.
Derek, thanks for pulling all these videos together into one place. I am slowly working my way through them; I have watched 2 and already have a *long* list of things to fix on my site.
You mentioned the Johnson box in the segment with Jay Baer. Are you able to point me in the direction of a site which uses them? I can’t recall ever seeing something similiar.
Thanks & warm regards
Jen
Take a look at this article here with the jump links. Those jump l inks in the beginning are similar to a Johnson box in action.
http://socialtriggers.com/twitter-tips
I will. Thank you.
Derek,
It was like I was dying of thirst and you delivered a ‘fire hose’ worth of actionable content. I’ve only watched 2 of the site reviews but already have a list of ‘To Do’s’ for my Blog.
Can’t wait to implement them and see what happens next.
Love the whole ‘resource box thing’… a great way to channel my visitor traffic and deliver more value.
Sweet!
Suzy Weiss
Dating Coach For Women Over 40
Suzy, glad you’re finding these videos helpful. Have you signed up for email updates yet here?
how did you get the YouTube videos to go beyond the min limit. I know it has to do with you tube partnership, but can you discuss that a little about your personal experience?
Those videos were uploaded on other peoples’ accounts. I’m not sure how they pulled it off, though I suspect it has something to do with partnership.
Been implementing all of your advice bit by bit. The one thing I can say is that your advice always delivers a result. I’ve grown my email list about about 200+ subs in the last month by implementing your stuff. It’s still work in progress, but at some point I’ll put together a case study for you on which posts of yours I used and what the results have been.
That’s what I like to hear Srinivas. And I’d love to see a case study about all that.
Hey Srini
I’d LOVE to see that Case Study when you do it π
Paul
Wonderful post. Tons and tons of useful information. Thank you very much (and thank your guests) for sharing this.
You’re welcome Steven!
Hey Derek,
I found out about you just yesterday through your latest post at DIY’s Blog.
Awesome website and great videos! I just finished watching them all and read some of you articles. Great valuable content. I just added my email to your list. keep the good work coming!
PS
A “Johnson Box” is named after Frank Johnson, a direct sales marketer who made them popular in American Heritage Magazine.
Sweet, thanks for pointing us in the direction of Frank Johnson. What a great strategy, and I’m surprised its not used more often today.
Derek, these are some really good videos. I like how you give very specific advice while at the same time showing how that applies to websites in general.
I’ve seen most of the videos, plus the one you did for Chris Ducker – am taking some time to watch the last ones.
You said you’ve done more videos – maybe a second post on them?
I will whip together a second post on them, eventually. Just wanted to show 7 videos or so at a time. Didn’t want to overwhelm people TOO much π
Derek,
These have been the most helpful videos I have seen on how to layout your Website to capture leads and convert traffic to your list. Plus knowing how you have stepped through all these people that are considered experts in their field and showing them some new tricks was awesome to see. Love the resource buckets!! Really appreciate you sharing your talents.
Glen
No problem Glen.
Glad you were able to find these videos helpful.
Derek,
What do you think about using some colored background to hilight the optin email form on the right side bar to draw’s people’s attention to the optin form?
Depends on how its implemented. I can’t really talk about colored backgrounds as a blanket statement.
Wow. I implemented as many as 5 points from these videos on my own blog. I totally enjoyed these videos.
Thanks so much Deren.
Awesome Naveen. Glad you liked the videos!
Quick question…
If I don’t misunderstand, you suggest that the content buckets opt-in should be “devoted” to create a specialty list. Something like a list for ONLY that subject.
Would you suggest sending broadcasts for a certain category of posts only and not all your updates? I mean, you subscribe the guy to a particular category of you blog and you then send him/her a series of emails ONLY about that subject.
Am I right here? Or am I loosing something else?
Thanks for your kind reply as usual!
PS: Great job contacting all that people. It made me smile how some of them were very little receptive to critic… and were not able to hide it very well! LOL!
You don’t need to create a specialty list. You just keep them all in the main list, but you tag them based on interest.
Wow, this is awesome stuff, I’m definitely watching them all, I’ve only seen two of them xD
Oh and why does the bottom line have a 3 in the beginning?
Removed it. Was a typo.
Can anyone who watched all of these videos post the notes they took? I don’t have 3 hours to watch all this.
Cheers.
Thanks for pulling these all together! After you reviewed Laura’s site and we started making changes, I had to find the other reviews you did… Now I can just come here and watch!
Learning so much – thank you!
Anne
Awesome Anne. Glad you’re finding them helpful. Make sure you sign up for email updates here too!
Derek! I love love watching your videos! I have got so much out of them, they are super useful and I tell everyone about them in Aus! Plus – I enjoy listening to your accent!
Thanks for sharing all your brilliant work with us. π
Accent? What accent!
FYI, I’m not able to view the videos from my smartphone, specifically it’s a blackberry. I’ve shared ur link on facebook to view it later from my office, thanks ahead!
Pretty much the most useful blog post I’ve seen all year. Congratulations Derek. What would be doubly useful would be to monitor the pre and post change results – these are mentioned in some. I’ve no doubt all would have seen an improvement – but the evidence would be very significant.
I’d love to collect some of those case studies for sure. That would be some great social proof for social triggers.
Thanks for the great resource – I’ve seen the video with Chris Brogan, and knew you were making the rounds, but to put them all on one page is just awesome of you. Much appreciate that!
Derek and Jay,
The “Johnson Box” seems it was named after the man, Frank H. Johnson, who used this direct method to improve the response to his magazine offers back in the 1940s. Not a bad idea! The link to his L.A. Times obituary is listed below. Now we know π
http://articles.latimes.com/2001/mar/12/local/me-36753
Best,
Brandon
By the way…thanks for the awesome content. You guys rock!
-BC
Awesome Derek – I’ve already seen a few of these (in fact, I originally came across you via your critique of Pat’s site) and am about to tuck into the rest! Priceless stuff.
Good to hear Tom.
How has the advice worked for you? Was it crushing?
I’ve implemented your advice regarding having a feature box, and included newsletter signups in my “About Me” page. I have a “New? Start Here!” page that will get a sign up form (when I get around to it…).
As for the other advice you have given…I think quite a lot of it depends on having a pretty mature site (content buckets and the like), so I will look to implement them down the line.
Unfortunately, since I implemented your suggestions on day one, I have nothing to compare it against!
Thanks Derek. U Da Man!
Thank you Jay
Great resources Derek, I’ll be coming here often to watch all the other videos I haven’t yet π
Awesome Haroun. Let me know what you think
Hey Derek,
First heard you on Authority Rules and I’ve been following you ever since. Thanks for the level of detail and transparency you provide. I really appreciate you pulling these videos together and helping me get my head around this whole website optimization thing in a new way.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks Randy. Glad they are of help. Have you implemented anything from the videos yet?
I thought the proper placement of opt-in forms was one of the most helpful things for me. I’m now using Pippity and I like how it works with my site. I hope to incorporate it on all of my sites. Thanks again for all of your help. BTW, your most recent interview on Mixergy was excellent!
Hey Derek
I always leave your posts or “videos” with a great take away that I can put into action. Love your stuff. Hey, BTW, your invitation image has a touch of dyslexia. But then again, maybe you coined a new term:
VidOes. ;>
I don’t know what you’re talking about ;-D
(I fixed it)
You know I love all your tips! π
Still working on some things but I have had a lot more subscribers since I changed a few things! Oh, and still waiting for that call…haha π
Uh oh. I owe you a call?
Haha, I told you (on twitter) if you ever want to review a fashion designer site, give me a call π
Oh yea! I forgot
So glad to see these videos in one place to come back every now and then to refresh my mind. I think I’ve only seen Laura, Lewis and part of Jays, I’m sure I can learn a lot more from the other videos.
Are you still doing this for people?
Very rarely.
I had a chance to look at some of these… Very well done.
Thanks Ricardo. Glad you’re a reader and watch here.
Derek,
Of all the email subscriptions I have your’s never go into my “trash” folder. Next month our organization will be working with a pro to develop a marketing and communications strategy. I’ve already been sharing some of the ideas and techniques that I’ve learned from your site and its paying off. Thanks and keep the videos coming!
Ben, I think I may need to use this as a testimonial π
Ha, feel free but don’t post a link to our website yet. Yikes! It needs some work. Its content rich and attractive but really needs to be more engaging and just plain simpler. Your video chat with Chris really helped me to see that. Have you thought about a post that shows some screen shots of before and after of sites you’ve helped transform?
Haha, alright. Sounds good to me.
A bunch of great info brother! Thanks for doing all these videos and posting them up!
Patrick Hitches
No problem Patrick. Glad you’re digging ’em
I was thinking about the next step.
OK, we doubled, tripled, whatever our conversion rates with these tactics. What’s next? How can we take the best possible value of this list we are making?
That’d be a nice series of posts, eh?
Yes, it would, for sure!
Derek when you post something, I pay close attention. Every blog post is just amazing. I am currently re-design by website and blog strategy because of your sound advice.
I am going to download and watch everyone of these video’s. I have only known about you for two months, but your advice is like a tidal wave that just grabbed my attention and came out of no where.
Your’e awesome!
Thank you Geoffrey.
Glad you’ve found some value here. What site are you going to be redesigning? The one in your link here?
Make sure you let me know how it turns out.
Yip the same one, will let you know once it is done. π
Sweet
Nice selection of videos and tons of value for anyone with a blog.
You’re advice has already helped me double my daily opt-ins from my blog. So thanks, bud! Hope I can return the favor sometime.
Yea Justin, glad its working for you dude. This is just some of them, eventually I’m going to have all of them here. I just didn’t want to overwhelm people with a million videos at onc π
Awesome information. I can use this to fix all our sites. Clean, easy and concise.
Thanks
All of them? How many is “all” of them?
AMAZING resource, Derek. Thanks for sharing all of these.
No problem Rick.
Thousands of people have watched these videos. It’s only fair to share em with more π
awesome stuff man!! your blazing a trail and its fun to watch….even more fun to put your tips into action.
Ed
Thanks Ed. What’s your site?
took your advice on adding feature box and turning about me page into a sorta rolling opt in.
This is great stuff. I’ll be hiring a cloning service soon so I can get to watch all this videos. Just kidding! Thanks for posting it.
Ha ha, when you’re done with that cloning service, can you refer them my way?
Great way to not only increase your exposure by making these videos in the first place and getting these guys to post them on their sites – but also a great way to create a resources that will be linked to, talked about, tweeted about, etc etc.
Way to go Derek.
paul
(Oh, and the videos are good too!)
Glad you’ve enjoyed the videos Paul.
The ultimate guide! I was wondering where to find all these videos together. You just read my mind Derek!
I will watch them, because I’ve started to apply some of the tips you gave to these people and they really work!
Thanks…
Awesome Mr. G. Glad you’re seeing results following some of these strategies and tactics.
Wow. I have so much work to do! Thanks for this, it’s an amazing compilation of solid advice. Bookmarked for sure.
Awesome Cass. There’s even more of these videos out there, but I’ll share those at a later time too π
Please do Derek! These are simply outstanding! Pure content baby.
Question: In your conversation with Laura Roeder, you said that nobody clicks on the “Building an email List 101” and “Online Sales 101” buttons on your own sidebar, probably because they look like ads.
Good call–that’s exactly what I thought the first time I saw them and skipped right over them. Your layout is so clean and simple that anything even with a slight design element to it makes me think it’s an ad.
Any reason you don’t do a redesign of these buttons to get more clickthroughs? I think the design right now makes it so easy for the eye to skip over the fact that these are free resource links.
Great piece of advice in all of these videos. Thanks Derek
No problem Rana.
Have you seen any of them before?
Yes, I did watch about 3 before. π
