On 2012, Doomsday, and "Taking Over The World"
Last Updated December 30th, 2011

I’ve got some quick advice for you for the new year:

Be careful.

Each year “experts” forecast doomsday, suggesting everything as we know it will change, but here’s the deal:

No one knows what’s going to happen.

So, instead of worrying about what will happen, look at what IS happening.

And if what IS happening works, do that.

Me?

I’m going to do what I always do Pinky…

(And by the way, if you hate it when “experts” take advantage of people, share this article Twitter or Facebook)

Hey Derek,

Well for one thing, I know the Mayans predicted the world ends on this year.

And it’s not that I’m fearless but if it really happens, I think I want to be part of it.

But to be honest, I think the world is not going to end at all… I just hope that some idiot does NOT wants to start the WWIII because then I would definitely be scared.

Sergio

PS. What works right now for me, is having this cold beer, reading some cool blogs and relaxing. πŸ˜‰

A few months ago, talking about what I am planning to do in 2012 seemed ridiculous to me since I don’t want to do anything but studying and make some money online.

However, it turns out to be that if you can’t create a clear goal of what you want to be, you’ll go to nowhere.

So I have decided that 2012 will be the year I use all of my efforts to learn about building niche websites and of course increase conversion rate πŸ™‚ (I have learnt many great tips here, thank you Derek)

I used simple-ology to keep up with my track and simplify my days. I hope that everything will be okay.

Good luck with your 2012, Derek πŸ™‚

Jarod Billingslea @JarodOnline

Well I have 14 goals I want to achieve for 2012, but im not entirely certain about them. Do you think they’re realistic – overall – goals though? (see my website)

    Derek Halpern

In general, you should likely include your site so we can see your goals.

However, even better, you should have posted the goals here.

Magda

Hi Derek and thank you for your valuable tips.

I want to launch a blog about online marketing and social media in the next year (soon :)) and I don’t know how to choose a domain name. I know that building personal branding is so important, but you don’t have domain with your name but still everybody knows that social triggers mean Derek πŸ˜‰

What do you think about naming blog? What are the pros and cons of naming blog my name?

Please answer.

Best regards from Europe πŸ™‚

    Derek Halpern

That’s up to the person who runs it.

I chose to use Social Triggers because that allows me to grow beyond just me… when the time is right.

I’m planing ti have an awesome and early start. Sydney where I live us one of the few places on earth that gets to celebrate nye first. And we host awesome parties down here;).
2012 is full of potential. I CANT WAIT!!!

    Derek Halpern

    Have fun, and good luck!

Do you have any specific goals?

Brian Kwong

Hey Derek,

love your email and sick of expert using fear to drive people to do what they want them to do.
Also, thanks for your support and doing the interview with me. I wish you the best in 2012 and looking forward to continue to learn from you.

Brian

    Derek Halpern

    You’re welcome Brian

What am I doing in 2012? I don’t know – which is what I’m embracing presently: That we don’t know jack. We think we do, we plan for it, we build our lives around thinking we know what’s what, but it’s all a fool’s errand. So, I CAN say that I have lots of ideas I’d like to birth.

One, I’m building a website (using Thesis, at your urging, thank you) where I’ll share my visionary leanings + contrarian approach. Doomsday? Not so much in our future – more likely to be found in the recent past: WWI + WWII, the Holocaust, Hiroshima + Nagasaki, Rwanda, child slavery + prostitution, capitalism at its most exploitative, government + corporate corruption…need I go on? No.

I’m a radical optimist and see 2012 as the turning point, as we are already beginning to collaborate instead of compete, when we harness technology to connect, uplift, empower ourselves and others. Where individuals are gathering power and discovering truths and not relying on hierarchies anymore to provide security or opportunity. DIY, but in community. Both/and.

I will do my best to communicate and spread optimism…to write my digital book/course on how to find, interview, and hire the right people for your business or social profit organization…to introduce a future where money is no longer relevant, longevity sees humans reaching ages like 150, 200, or even +, disease ends and health reigns ~ as well as steps we can take to reach these seemingly far-fetched states (imagine trying to explain to someone the technology we take for granted now, back in 1980!)

Oh, and besides all that…I want to have a lot more fun next year! Live music, theater, beach + mountains…or just deep belly laughter with loved ones.

Budding writer, speaker, futurist at large in 2012~
All the best to everyone here!

    Derek Halpern

    Whoa.

You’ve got big plans for this year, I see.

Where will we be able to find your site?

      Kellie Brooks

      Thanks for asking, Derek!
I’ll be at kelliebrooks.com – I’m in designing mode now – taking the Jetsetter class with Amanda – http://girlsguidetowebdesign.com/ She uses Thesis for all her tutorials – and they rock!
Big plans, indeed ~ are there any other ones to have πŸ˜‰

World domination!
Glad to find someone else shares my sense of humor

Look forward to the course.

Sarah

    Derek Halpern

    Thanks Sarah.

And yes, can’t take life too seriously πŸ™‚

Hi Derek,

My New Years resolution is to simply do better than I did in 2011. Stay focused and committed to each and every goal I set for myself.

    Derek Halpern

    That’s a good resolution.

Do you have specific goals in mind, or are you keeping it general?

Barbara Collins

Hi Derek…
Our sales have been very strong the last 2 months of the year…well over $7,000 in retail for a hair salon with 9 stylists is well past “awesome”! I will continue with what has been working for us: good products for clients to purchase, knowledgeable stylists, and letting clients “try before they buy”..it works for us!

    Derek Halpern

    Congratulations Barbara!

Fady

well I am just planning to to learn HTML and CSS so i am hoping by march 2012 i will master them. by the way have you got any advice on learning HTML and CSS?

    Derek Halpern

There’s a book called Bulletproof web design. You should check that out.

Sean Davis

My goal for 2012 is to do more. I’m sick of reading, planning, and thinking about everything. This year, I intend to be as omnipresent as a human can be. Plain and simple.

    Derek Halpern

    I feel you there.

Though reading is a necessity for me.

Researching, acquiring knowledge, and learning new things is what drives me.

VeehCirra

I am thoroughly intrigued Derek, just signed up for the secret list. You give such practical advice it is just amazing. I applied your tips and they do work.Looking forward to see what you have in store…

Happy New Year πŸ™‚

    Derek Halpern

Happy New Year to you too Veeh!

Thanks for your Tip to be careful Derek!
But you ever should be careful and prepared – not only in 2012 πŸ™‚

Pamela

World domination and doomsday – and, yes! I am tired of the ‘experts’ doing the manipulation thing (not that offering a ‘secret’ sign up is manipulative). ; )

I signed up…

My usual response to supposed experts is, “I think so, Brain, but how are we going to get the monkeys to wear the leotards…”

    Derek Halpern

The manipulation thing is getting old, for sure.

And I hope that it wasn’t.

I’m always very clear at what my intentions are πŸ™‚

      Pamela

I was teasing. Manipulation only occurs when there is no content on the ‘other side’. That has never been the case with you…

I’m excited about the new training. : )

        Derek Halpern

        Thanks Pamela!

Andy M

2012 is a big year for me as I will be getting married in August! Just in time before the end of the world, too. Haha, JK! I don’t believe that stuff, but I did as my fiancΓ© if we should put, “This could be the last wedding you ever attend” on the invitations.

    Derek Halpern

    Ha ha.

    Congratulations Andy!

Pat

Thanks for all of your information. Some I read a bit later because I’m busy working on your previous advice.

2012 is the year of business social video strategy. Enough just putting impromptu videos up on your blog and YouTube…time to stop, think helpful series. This is my focus for 2012. Each with monthly tweaking.

Secondly, I’m backing out of facebook and jumping totally into G+. For my B2B, I feel G+ is a much better platform for collaboration.

Edwin Soler

Derek,
Thanks for the insights. I plan on working on my business like it will be the end of the world, although I know it will not. One of my products will be capatalizing on this doomsday fear. It fits pefect with what we are doing. No, I am not ripping anyone off, just the opposite, providing some solid information about how easily we can be decieved in just about anything. Like you, I’m about educating people. Speaking of education, I just ordered my late Christmas present; a book related to direct mail. So this year I plan on going hard with the direct mail, improving my blogging, adding an SEO make over to my site and so much more. I’m so glad 2012 is NOT the end of the world. I have too much to do. Hapy New Year!

    Derek Halpern

Good to hear you’re on the right side of this war Edwin πŸ™‚

Mirek Burnejko

Hey Derek. As always I’m happy when I receive your email πŸ™‚ And for that big thank you!!! What? Yes. Thank you for that mail. Based on you mailing system I’ve built my own and have many new connections.

I plan in 2012 to grow my website with your advices (Mailing and website building), Andrew’s (all Mixergy stuff) and also Lewis’ advices (LinkedIN).

You guys rock !!!

    Derek Halpern

    Thansk Mirek.

Lewis is awesome, as is Andrew Warner from Mixergy. I really like what both of those guys are up to.

Ileane

Hi Derek, I signed up for the secret list already. Can’t wait….

    Derek Halpern

    Awesome!
