DAY 2

Your Day 2 Assignment

Ok, today’s assignment is all about walking hacks - small ways to get in extra steps every day. So when time is tight, you don’t have to go on any long walks...

“My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She's ninety-seven now, and we don't know where the hell she is.”

How do you do it? Start with the walking hacks below.

Step 1: Use these 15 walking hacks today

Here are some of the most common ways to get in extra steps. The goal for today is to use as many of these as you can:

  1. Walk to get to work and to your appointments (store, restaurant, doctor, hairdresser etc.).
  2. If walking is not an option, take the bus or train, get off a few stops early, and walk the rest of the way.
  3. If public transportation is not an option, park your car in a spot that’s as far away from the entrance as possible.
  4. Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  5. Do the tea and coffee runs in your office.
  6. Walk to a co-worker’s office instead of emailing or calling.
  7. Get up and walk around when you make a phone call.
  8. Drink more water (yes, so you take more trips to the restroom, and when you do, take the long way or go to a restroom that’s farther away)
  9. Make multiple trips on purpose (e.g. multiple smaller trips to the laundry, an extra trip to the mailbox).
  10. Walk in place while doing chores (dishes, laundry, vacuum).
  11. When watching TV, get up to change the channel or…
  12. ...walk during commercials.
  13. Don’t stand around, pace back and forth.
  14. Take your dog once more around the block - your four-legged friend will appreciate it!
  15. Walk while you listen to your favorite podcast or audiobook

Those are plenty of walking hacks right there!

But of course you can...

Step 2: Create your own walking hacks

You see, the BEST way to create the new habit of walking, is to attach it to something you’re ALREADY doing…

Remember Day 1? We set a reminder as our cue to stand up. Now think about your daily routine:

Which daily activities could be your cue to get up and walk?

And when you come up with your own walking hack, please make sure to share it in the comments below!

So let’s hear your favorite walking hack in the comments. And if you’re counting your steps, share your count!
